things to do in belfast with the kids

Ulster Museum is a museum in Ulster, Northern Ireland

Dinosaurs, an Egyptian mummy, and curiosities from all over the world are on display at the Ulster Museum, which is a solid family favourite. The Ulster Museum always has something to pique the interest of children and adults alike, thanks to free admission and a constant schedule of events and exhibitions, there is never a dull moment at the museum. For the kids, the dinosaurs will definitely keep them entertained and if you are interested in the political history of Northern Ireland – there is no better way to learn than through the visual stimulus that is offered here.

The Lost City –  Adventure Golf

At Cityside Retail and Leisure Park, Lost City Adventure Golf offers two indoor jungle-themed golf courses where players of all ages may take on Sunken Skull Ridge, Explorer Falls, and a variety of interactive hazards. Players navigate the course via simulated thunder and lightning storms, putting their skills to the test against rainforest animals and shifting walls. If players make a hole in one on the 18th hole, they will receive a large amount of Inca Gold! Now I have personally been here a number of times with no kids and it is excellent – did I mention there is a bar and pub food?

Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory

Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory is known across the country as one of the greatest distributors of 100-year-old recipes for handmade chocolates, fudge, and boiled sweets.

A visit to Aunt Sandra’s is like stepping back in time, as visitors can watch how chocolates and fudge are created, with the majority of it being sampled as it is made. They also provide workshops and demonstrations where you can learn how to make any type of dessert you can think of. The kids are entertained and then there is the added bonus that you can munch your way around here.

We Are Vertigo

I’m flying without wings – Westlife are not the only ones. At Ireland’s first indoor skydiving centre, you can fly without wings too! With gusts of wind exceeding 120 mph, you’ll be blown off your feet as you experience the sensation of skydiving while accompanied by a certified instructor. Alternatively, you may put your talents to the test on the Ninja Master Course, a 110-foot obstacle course with walls, hoops, and challenges that is suited for people of all ages. Fun for all ages and they take group bookings if you are in town with an older group of friends, this one is for the child in you – dying to get out.

Shaw’s Bridge

Located near Malone House and is within easy distance of Belfast city centre, head off for some fresh air and run around the open fields and forest that make up this spectacular park. The children’s playground is always a hit, as well as bike trails if you are hoping for something a little more adventurous. Perfect for a family picnic too and plenty of room for the kids to roam free and feed the ducks – there is also a resident ice cream van to satisfy your sweet tooth.

C.S Lewis Square

Aslan, Mr Tumnus, and the Beavers, just some of the characters that you can expect in the form of seven bronze statues that make up the famous C.S Lewis square. Then stop by the Jack Coffee Bar for some hot drinks, snacks, and light meals. The Belfast born, great mind behind The Chronicles of Narnia is a much celebrated Irish writer and this garden is the most beautiful tribute and the great backdrop for photos of the kids to send back to the family – you are guaranteed smiles here.

Prison Island

Are you up for a fun family challenge? Take on the 25 prison-themed cells on Prison Island, which were inspired by the ‘Crystal Maze.’ You can wander around and try any cell in any sequence in teams of two to four people, and there’s something for everyone with a terrific mix of physical, tactical, and skill-based games. There is so much fun to be had here and not just for the kids. The games are challenging and attract groups of all ages, sure to tire the kids out completely.

Gruffalo Trail

Each character on this wonderful trail through an equally magical forest created by sculptor Andrew McIntyre. This is the perfect family day out when the sun is shining or the perfect puddle jumping expedition if not – definitely highly recommended.
